In the first-ever eastern swamp deer census, 868 swamp deer were counted at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. The park’s total deer population includes 173 males, 557 females, and 138 yearlings. Previously, the process was only documented in Kaziranga National Park.

With the new census, it was discovered that the swamp deer population had decreased, as their count in 2018 was 907. According to park officials, the population decline may have been caused by the floods that occurred in 2019 and 2020.

There were 786 swam deer counted in the Eastern Assam Division, 62 in the Biswanath Wildlife Division, and 20 in the Nagaon Wildlife Division. At least 29 enumerators, 112 forest personnel were involved in the process.
