For the first time since 2010, the Indian men’s badminton team thrashed Tahiti 5-0 in a Group C match to go to the quarterfinals of the Thomas Cup in Aarhus.
It was India’s second straight 5-0 victory after the squad defeated the Netherlands by the same scoreline on Sunday.
Tuesday’s win over the island nation ensured India’s finish in top-two in the four-team Group C.
In the final match on Wednesday, India will face China, a traditional powerhouse.
In the first singles match, B Sai Praneeth defeated Louis Beaubois by 21-5 21-6 in 23 minutes.
Sameer Verma made it 2-0 with a 41-minute triumph over Remi Rossi, winning 21-12 21-12. Kiran George sealed the tie for India in the third men’s singles with a 21-4 21-2 thrashing of Elias Maublanc in under 15 minutes.
Krishna Prasad and Vishnu Vardhan defeated Krishna Prasad and Vishnu Vardhan 21-8 21-7 in 21 minutes in the insignificant doubles matches.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Maublanc and Heiva Yvonet by 21-5 21-3 in the final doubles match of the day.
It is the first time the Indian men’s team has advanced to the quarterfinals of the event since 2010.
Meanwhile, after beating Scotland 3-1 on Tuesday, the Indian women’s team also advanced to the Uber Cup quarterfinals.
