Internal disagreements have emerged inside the Congress party in Manipur, following the departure of party president Govindas Konthoujam and rumours of eight other party MLAs joining the BJP.

On Tuesday, the president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) resigned for personal reasons.

According to reports, up to eight Congress MLAs would switch to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The political event comes a year before general elections to Manipur’s 60-member state assembly.

Konthoujam is a six-term Congress MLA from the Bishnupur Assembly Constituency as well as the Congress Legislature Party’s Chief Whip in the Assembly.

In December 2020, he was appointed as the president of the MPCC. He served as a Cabinet minister in Manipur.
