Police said on Saturday that two men wanted for the murders of two Uber drivers in a five-hour period on January 7 had been apprehended.

According to police, the two men and an accomplice (who has yet to be apprehended) pretended to be passengers, strangled the cab drivers, and fled with their cellphones and cash. The two men arrested have been identified as Akku alias Akash (19) and Junaid (19), both of whom are residents of Anand Parbat in central Delhi. Pritam was identified as their accomplice. Three stolen cellphones from the victims have been recovered by police.

After booking rides with these cabs, the three allegedly murdered two cab drivers in Anand Parbat and Bharat Nagar on January 7.

According to Shweta Chauhan, deputy commissioner of police (central), a police team spotted a WagonR car parked on Ramjas Road with a man lying unconscious inside around 8.45 a.m. on Friday.

“The man was transported to RML Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He didn’t appear to be hurt, but he had bled from his mouth. Anil Yadav, a 48-year-old Uber cab driver, was later identified as the victim. The deceased’s phone and wallet were missing, and the manner of death appeared suspicious. When police contacted his wife, she told them Yadav had left for work around 6.30 a.m., Chauhan said.

While the case was being investigated, police learned of another murder in Bharat Nagar, in north-west Delhi. Chhavi Nath, the driver, was discovered dead in his Hyundai i10, which was parked in the Gulabi Bagh area, about 4 kilometres from Bharat Nagar.

“Passenger information was obtained from the Uber office in Gurugram… “We set up a technical surveillance and detained Akku and Junaid near the railway line, near the Zakhira flyover,” Chauhan said.

The two men admitted to the murders and claimed they planned to rob the drivers after posing as passengers in order to buy drugs.
