Madhya Pradesh: Minister apologised for remarks about Upper-Caste Women

Following a warning from chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Madhya Pradesh minister Bisahulal Sahu apologised on Sunday for his remarks that upper-caste women should work like those from the lower strata of society.

The comments made on Thursday sparked a backlash from Rajput and other upper caste organisations. “In the villages, women from lower social strata work in the fields and also do household chores. Big people like Thakur and Thakar, on the other hand, keep their women confined to their homes and do not allow them to leave. On Thursday, Sahu, a tribal, said, “They should pull them out of their houses because both men and women should work equally.”

Chouhan said on Sunday that he spoke with Sahu and that he has publicly apologised for his remarks. “Whatever the sentiment, the message must be delivered correctly. Every word should be carefully spoken. I’ve warned all ministers and MLAs (members of the legislative assembly) not to make such statements under any circumstances.” He went on to say that anyone who sends the wrong message to the public will not be forgiven. He went on to say that women must be respected.

Sahu stated in a video that he has always respected women. “I apologise for offending their feelings with my statement. “I had no intention of hurting anyone.”

Rajput groups Karni Sena and Kshatriya Mahasabha staged protests across the state on Saturday. At the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party office, Karni Sena members also displayed black flags to Sahu.

During rallies against quotas in promotion and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act in 2018, Chouhan faced an upper-caste backlash when he said that no one can dare to take reservation away.
