Kashmir students who cheered India’s loss to Pakistan charged under UAPA; prevented from working for govt

Kashmir students Srinagar colleges have been charged under the UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) and other pertinent provisions of the Indian Penal Code for celebrating Pakistan’s victory over India in the T20 World Cup on Sunday. In two different incidences, one at the SKIMS hospital in Soura and the other at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Karan Nagar, Srinagar, two independent cases have been filed.

While celebrating India’s loss to Pakistan, Kashmir students pursuing MBBS and other degrees in the dormitory chanted slogans, including ‘azadi’ slogans and exploded fireworks. According to sources, the FIR is still active and the defendants have yet to be named.

According to reports, the pupils will also be prevented from applying for government positions. Following India’s defeat to Pakistan, videos of claimed students from various colleges celebrating, cheering, and dancing gleefully went popular on social media.

Another video showed Kashmiri students singing the Pakistan national anthem on India’s loss.

Meanwhile, Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party, questioned what was wrong with Kashmiris cheering India’s defeat over Pakistan.

She even cited the repeal of Article 370, which stripped the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir of its special status and the riders that came with it as part of the Union of India
