Nagaland: Growing threats of third wave; undetected & underreported cases

Third Wave

The state’s Department of Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) is concerned that “there is sufficient evidence of the possibility of a third wave at any time,” claiming that many cases are “undetected and underreported.”

The state’s weekly sample positivity rate (WSPR) has continued to rise in the last two weeks, according to the health department’s weekly bulletin (from 2.1 percent to 2.9 percent and 3.2 percent ).

Tuensang, which had a WSPR of 1.6 percent and Longleng had a WSPR of 0 percent between October 9 and 15, had a weekly positivity rate of more than 10%, according to the department.

Tuensang‘s WSPR (October 16-22) was 10.5 percent, while Longleng’s was 11 percent. Wokha also reported a 7.4 percent weekly positivity rate, according to the report.

In comparison to the previous week, there has been a slight increase in Covid-19 positive cases. The week saw 142 new cases and four deaths, with a weekly sample positivity rate of 3.2 percent.

According to the department, there were 32 new Covid-19 hospital admissions this week, with 19 of them in Tuensang alone.

In the last five weeks, an average of 40 new COVID-19 hospital admissions and 6 COVID-19 deaths have been reported, according to the report.

Over 11.70 lakh doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered across the state, with the highest vaccination coverage in Dimapur, Kohima, Longleng, and Mokokchung.

In addition, the health department issued the following safety guidelines, which are highly recommended in order to avoid any super spreader events or a third wave:

In any gathering or event, masks should be worn by everyone regardless of vaccination status. The same should be enforced by event organisers.

To enforce physical separation, every effort should be made to keep the size of any social, religious, or official gathering to a minimum.

To the extent possible, events should be held outside. Any unavoidable indoor events/gatherings should have adequate natural ventilation (Open doors and windows).

Hand washing stations and hand sanitizers should be strategically placed.

COVID-19 vaccination of the eligible population is the only way to stop the pandemic, and it should be promoted in all settings.

On Saturday, Nagaland reported 18 new Covid-19 positive cases, with one patient succumbing to the virus.

Seven new cases were reported in Dimapur and Kohima, and four in Phek, bringing the total number of cases to 31707.

In Dimapur, another patient succumbed to the virus, bringing the total number of people who have died to 679. (including 15 non-Covid deaths).
