PM should follow through on his promise to remove farm laws: NPCC

Even though Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologised and announced the Centre’s decision to repeal the three farm laws on November 19, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president K. Theire said on Sunday that the Congress party would only accept if the three contentious laws were repealed during the winter session of Parliament.

After a year of effort, he said it was a big triumph for the farmers.

Therie told reporters at the Tourist Lodge that the Prime Minister had made many promises that had not been kept, and that he hoped that the three agriculture laws would not be like the pledge to resolve the Naga political issue.

Therie took a shot at the BJP, saying the saffron party’s hubris on farm rules resulted in the deaths of around 700 farmers who had been protesting since September 2020. “Recent by-election results, which humiliated the BJP on the mainland, have tempered their hubris,” he remarked.

On Modi’s claim that his government was unable to persuade a sector of farmers of the benefits of the new farm legislation, Therie pointed out that this small group of people had beaten the BJP in bye elections, indicating the party’s demise.

He predicted that after the 2024 general election, the country would change and people would smile again.

Despite the existence of the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC), which has helped the public, Therie asserted that the new farm regulations were simply intended to assist corporations and gain control of the agriculture industry.

“Why did we need these three farm regulations to limit the profit of middlemen and farmers?” Therie wondered.

Therie claimed that the state government of Nagaland lacked an agriculture policy or a Minimum Support Price (MSP) for farmers. He further stated that, despite Nagaland’s adoption of APMC, it was not functioning well.

When questioned if the repeal of the farm laws was motivated by a fear of losing votes in the next elections, Therie said the BJP may have believed that by doing so, they would win back people’s hearts, but they would be proven incorrect. He remarked, “The BJP will continue to make mistakes.”

When asked about his party’s various protests, Therie stated that the Congress would continue to express the public’s concerns until the state government awoke from its slumber.

V Lasuh, vice president of the NPCC and chairman of the farmers’ wing, said the Congress would continue to protest till the MSP is guaranteed by the Centre.
