In a joint operation on Wednesday, the Serchhip Battalion of the Assam Rifles seized 53 cases and 47 loose packets of V- Valiant Mild cigarettes (foreign origin cigarettes) worth Rs 70, 12,200 in Tlangsam Mizoram‘s Champhai district.
Assam Rifles troops and Customs Department officials carried out a joint operation based on specific information, AR said in a statement. The recovered foreign-origin cigarettes are estimated to be worth Rs 70, 12,200.
The recovered items were turned over to the Champhai district’s Customs Preventive Force for further legal action.
According to an Assam Rifles official, ongoing smuggling of foreign-origin cigarettes is a major source of concern for the state of Mizoram, particularly along the India-Myanmar border.
He said the Assam Rifles, dubbed the ‘Sentinels of the Northeast,’ have continued their efforts in Mizoram to combat smuggling.
