Meghalaya: Oil India Limited discovers Natural Gas in Dangar

Natural gas has been discovered at Dangar in the East Khasi Hills by Oil India Limited’s (OIL) research wing.

In a significant breakthrough, the discovery has the potential to be a game-changer for the state’s revenue-generating.

Himalaya Shangpliang, MLA of  Mawsynram, stated on Tuesday that an OIL team had visited Umphniang village near Dangar in the East Khasi Hills last month to collect samples of reported gas seepage.

Moreover, the seepage location is near the Indo-Bangladesh border, which is close to the Chhatak gas field in the neighboring country.

According to Shangpliang, preliminary laboratory studies were done at OIL’s Research & Development Centre in Duliajan, Assam, which revealed that the gas is of thermogenic origin (related to or involving the generation of heat) and it contains a large amount of methane.

According to Shangpliang, OIL scientists have declared that more research and analysis would be required before any exploration effort to determine the commercial viability of the hydrocarbon present in the area.

In addition,  he said that the presence and nature of any future instances of comparable seepages in the surrounding areas are being investigated.

Furthermore, researchers are also interested in the oil that’s been discovered in the Telsora A and B villages, as well as Umsohpieng. Another crew is coming to gather oil samples in these three to four villages.

However, Gagann Jain, an independent director of Oil India Limited, stated that once Shangpliang exposed the seepage in the Assembly earlier this year, the entire procedure of doing the exercise was followed upon.

According to Jain, the seepage is near an old exploration block that was exploited by the Oil and Natural Gas Commission in the 1990s.

However, he insisted that the OIL team would need to do more research and analysis to determine the hydrocarbons’ commercial viability.
