Assam’s water supply project named after ‘Pakistan’ sparked controversy

The water supply project, dubbed ‘Pakistan,’ is located in Assam’s Dhemaji district. Notably, the name ‘Pakistan’ for the project is merely a typo. The project’s proper name should have been “Pak Sthan.”

“The name Pak Sthan Suk was given to the current residents by their forefathers. Due to its remote location, it was once an isolated land inhabited primarily by Ahom and Chutia community members. “There are no Muslim villagers there,” TOI quoted Dhemaji (Sadar) Sub-divisional Officer Nandita Roy Gohain as saying.

Workers from the Bir Lachit Sena, on the other hand, are said to have removed the word “Pakistan” from the water supply project’s name plates.

The name “Pakistan Suk” has been in circulation for years, according to the report, even in official documents.

As a result, the water project was given the name ‘Pakistan Suba’ (colony) Water Supply Scheme by the PHE department.

The project has been renamed Burhakuri Dakhin Suk after revenue village Burhakuri under which comes the area. Burhakuri village head, Parul Chutia (38), said the entire village has 249 families and the water supply project was built for the families of ‘Pakistan Suk’.
