Nagaland: NPCC condemns Assembly resolution; says people want justice not apology

The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) condemned the Assembly resolution, which called for a “apology” from the competent authority…”, claiming that the people deserved justice, not an apology.

In a press release, NPCC president K Therie expressed concern that the apology request devalued the entire resolution on Monday. He claimed that the demand for an apology for a slaughter was an insult to the dead families, their villages, the community, and the voice of those seeking justice.

Therie insisted that the Assembly had humiliated Naga courageous hearts, and that an apology for a slaughter was not acceptable, adding that killings and apologies could not be created a precedent.

In terms of justice, he stated that the resolution was direct and stated that the chief minister and home minister were accountable to the people of Nagaland.

“They cannot run away from their responsibilities. They should answer whether troops from 21 Para had come with their knowledge. If yes, why? If not, why criminal procedure should not be initiated against them? They cannot take cover under AFSPA. I have already explained earlier,” he specified.

Reiterating that the people sought justice, Therie asked that the perpetrators be charged in accordance with the law. But, rather than prosecuting the perpetrators, he observed that the Assembly, shockingly, wanted them to apologise and absolve themselves of the guilt of committing a massacre.

He claimed that the decision was intended to give the impression that the state was innocent and that the army had carried out the operation without the permission of the state government. But, he pointed out, if that was the case, the army had violated the constitution and committed a crime against humanity. And if not, he insisted that the army identify who was to blame.

According to Therie, the army did not have the authority to simply come from another state and fire and murder innocent and peaceful individuals.

“We are sorry for the people. Given an opportunity, Congress will deliver justice,” he declared.

It may be recalled that the NPCC had written to the President of India with a three-point charter of demands, which include constitution of an all-party parliamentary committee to investigate Oting massacre, deliver justice by arresting the culprits and implement political solution under President’s Rule to avoid bias and ill-will.
