The Junior National Rugby Championship 2021 will feature a total of seven rugby players (under-18), including six girls. They were chosen after participating in a rugby training and selection camp held at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati from November 24-28.
The Bajali Rugby Team sent eight girls and four boys to the training camp, with six girls and one boy being selected for the Assam Rugby team.
Assam’s Bajali rugby players will compete in the Junior National Rugby Championship 2021, which will be held at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar.
Jesmina Begum, Riya Talukdar, Gitanjali Roy, Sumi Kakati, Sikha Das, Garima Roy, and Dhanmani Kakati have been chosen.
Khanin Roy, general secretary of the Bajali Rugby Association, who is currently training the Bajali rugby team, said, “It is a proud moment for Bajali that the state players will play under the captainship of Jesmina Begum. It is indeed a great contribution to women empowerment.”
The Bajali Rugby Association aims to popularise and raise awareness of the rugby game in Assam.
The majority of the selected players are hardworking and come from small villages, cycling 10-12 kilometres each day to practise at Bajali Higher Secondary School
The Bajali Rugby Association was formed in February 2021, and the association organised a three-day camp with the help of the Assam Rugby Association in March 2021.
It’s worth noting that there was previously no rugby training for girls in Assam, and the Rugby Association of Bajali was the first to host a girls’ rugby camp.
