Assam: Health Minister inspects construction site of Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital

Assam’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Keshab Mahanta, paid a visit to the Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital construction site in Besorgaon, Kokrajhar, on Wednesday.

Health Minister was accompanied by Arup Kr. Dey, BTC EM of Health and Family Welfare, Lawrence Islary and Jiron Basumatary, MLAs Lawrence Islary and Jiron Basumatary, and Varnali Deka, Deputy Commissioner of Kokrajhar.

Speaking to the media, Health Minister Keshab Mahanta said that work on the Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital was well underway and that it would be completed within a year.

Dispur had decided to start the classes within a year after receiving permission from the Indian Medical Council, he said.

He also stated that more new medical colleges should be established in Assam to meet the needs of the people in the region.

He went on to say that the erosion of the Gaurang River, which runs through the construction site, was a threat to Kokrajhar Medical College, but that the State Government had approved financial assistance for erosion-prevention measures, which would begin soon.

In response to a question about the importance of improving health infrastructure in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Mahanta stated that the Assam government would revamp the health sector.

The department will provide sub-centres with Rs. 7 lakh to Rs. 9 lakh in stages and will establish a model hospital in each district, he said, adding that the government will focus on building more 30-bed hospitals to meet demand.
