On Friday, a wild elephant trampled to death an elderly woman in western Assam’s Goalpara district. Tilottoma Ray, a 70-year-old woman, was killed by a wild elephant around 7 a.m. in Korkuchi, Dohela, under the Dudhnoi Police Station.
Jitendra Kumar, Divisional Forest Officer, Goalpara, said the body of the elderly woman had been taken for a post mortem and that the necessary legal formalities for granting ex-gratia to the deceased’s next of kin were being completed.
A local BJP leader was killed by a herd of wild elephants near the Rani Reserve Forest on the outskirts of Guwahati earlier this month. This year, 19 people have died as a result of elephant attacks in Goalpara district.
Goalpara district has accounted for 19 deaths so far in elephant attacks this year. This is the second such death this month.
Over 102 people, mostly women, have died so far this year as a result of elephant attacks in various parts of Assam.
According to a press release, the Assam government has provided Rs 4 lakh in ex-gratia to the family of the victim killed by wild animals.
