Meghalaya CLP leader Ampareen Lyngdoh is rumoured to be leaving the party to join the National People’s Party led by chief minister Conrad Sangma (NPP). The speculations arose as a result of Congress leader Fantin Joseph Lakadong’s decision to leave the party and join the NPP.

Ampareen Lyngdoh’s husband is Fantin Joseph Lakadong, leader of the Meghalaya CLP. However, Ampareen Lyngdoh has denied the rumours, stating that she has no plans to leave Congress. Meanwhile, many Meghalaya Congress members believe that Fantin Joseph Lakadong’s decision to leave the party and join the NPP is a sign that his wife, Ampareen Lyngdoh, will follow in her husband’s footsteps.

Some Congress leaders, who did not want to be identified, also suggested that Ampareen Lyngdoh might join the NPP ahead of the Meghalaya Assembly elections in 2023.

Furthermore, reports are circulating that Congress MLA PT Sawkmie is planning to leave the party and join the UDP before the 2023 Assembly elections. Notably, Ampareen Lyngdoh and PT Sawkmie are the Congress party’s two remaining big names in Meghalaya.

Previously, 12 Congress MLAs, including former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, had defected to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The Congress now has only five MLAs in the Meghalaya Assembly, which has a total of 60 seats.

Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh (born May 5, 1965) is an Indian politician who has served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Meghalaya since 2008. She is the working president of the Indian National Congress in the state of Meghalaya. She also currently serves as the Chairperson of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s Committee for Empowerment of Women.
