Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, will meet with Conrad Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, on Friday in Shillong to resolve the vexing inter-state border problem.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will visit Shillong for the meeting, which will take place one day before Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Meghalaya on Saturday.

Both chief ministers will meet to address border disputes in at least 12 regions.

Conrad Sangma previously visited Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on July 17 to discuss the need of finding an amicable solution to the decades-old border issue between Meghalaya and Assam.

“Assam CM will come to Shillong on July 23 and the chief secretary of Assam will be present in the meeting. In the meeting some presentations will be made by both the states,” Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma had said earlier.

Following the discussion on Friday, another meeting on the border issue will be held in Guwahati with a team of officials from both states.

The Meghalaya chief minister further stated that authorities from both states may make combined visits to certain locations.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, on the other hand, has stated that he anticipates “some headway” during the Assam-Meghalaya border discussions in Shillong on Friday.

Significantly, this would be the first official meeting between the chief ministers of Assam and Meghalaya following their unofficial conversations on the matter.

This meeting is significant because on Saturday Union Home Minister Amit Shah will convene a conference with the chief ministers of all eight Northeast states to develop a strategy for resolving border issues among the region’s governments.
