In a shocking news, lightning took lives of at least 18 elephants at Bamuni Hills under Barhampur police station in Central Assam’s Nagaon district on 12 May, 2021.
On Wednesday night, lightning struck the elephants atop the hill. Three elephants were lying dead on the foothills, while four others were found partially burnt.
Local villagers informed about the incident to the forest officials on Thursday afternoon. A postmortem will be carried out on Friday.
A social activist from Tezpur, Dilip Nath has refuted the claims of the lightning strike. “I can’t fathom how so many elephants can die from lightning. I request a CBI enquiry from the Assam government and also request the Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya to look into the matter”.
