Assam: CM Sarma to witness Burning of 2,479 Rhino Horns

The rhino horns, which have been stashed in six different locations around the state, will be burned in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on September 22, 2021. Under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, the Assam government has decided to burn rhino horns, elephant tusks, and other wild animal body parts that have been held in various districts.

The government treasuries of Morigaon, Barpeta, Mangaldai, Guwahati, Tezpur, Nagaon, Kaziranga, and Golaghat currently house rhino horns, elephant tasks, and other wild animal body parts. According to data from the forest department, a high-level commission has already reviewed 2,623 rhino horns, of which 2,479 will be burned.

To commemorate World Rhino Day, the Assam Forest Department is planning a public burning of 2,489 rhino horns. For the burning, gas-powered fireplaces have been set up at the Bokakhat public playground.
