According to police, at least seven people are still missing after their boat capsized in the Brahmaputra river near Nimatighat in upper Assam’s Jorhat district on Wednesday afternoon. According to government records, 63 people have been rescued so far, one of whom died in hospital.
Parimita Das, a 28-year-old Guwahati resident who worked as an associate professor at a college in Majuli, died of her injuries in Jorhat Medical College Hospital on Wednesday evening (JMCH). According to sources, JMCH is treating eight rescued people.
The boat was carrying a total of 67 people when the mishap occurred on Wednesday afternoon, according to police. Locals, on the other hand, claimed that the boat was carrying around 100 people. Because no tickets were issued to the boat’s passengers, the administration was unable to determine the exact number of passengers on board. The accident occurred when the Majuli Kamalabari bound private boat ‘Ma Kamala’ collided with the Majuli-bound government-owned ferry ‘Tripkai.’
