Nearly 2500 rhino horns would be destroyed from treasuries across Assam. The destruction of rhino horns was allowed by the Assam cabinet on Thursday. Since 1979, these rhino horns have been held in state treasuries. These horns were found on deceased rhinos or confiscated from poachers.
Assam forest minister Parimal Suklabaidhya remarked, “The cabinet has agreed to demolish 2479 horns.” In Assam, there are a total of 2623 rhino horns held in treasuries. 50 of the 2623 horns cannot be destroyed due to outstanding legal proceedings.
94 rhino horns will also be kept for educational purposes. The Assam government began the process of verifying rhino horns held in state treasuries in August. On August 18, the Morigaon Treasury began the process of verifying rhino horns.
