Jorhat Mob-Lynching: Kola Lora, Main Suspect killed in Car Accident while trying to flee police custody

After accused Niraj Das, alias Kola Lora, attempted to flee from police custody and jumped out of the car, the accident occurred in Jorhat, Assam. The following police vehicle lost control and hit him on the road shortly after he jumped out of the police car he was riding in.

The accident also resulted in the injuries of three police officers. The accused and the three police officers were taken to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital right away (JMCH). Doctors at the JMCH, on the other hand, declared Niraj Das, the accused, dead.

“The incident took place at around 1:30am Wednesday. He (Niraj Das) was a drug smuggler. He had assured us of helping in identifying drug trade spots in Jorhat. So, we took him to bust drug network. But it now appears that he was misleading us. He had planned to escape from police custody by taking us to that place,” a police official told the media.

He added: “He jumped out of the police vehicle. The car that followed, which was also a police vehicle, lost control by seeing him jump out of a running car and instead accidently hit the accused leading to his death.” 

“Three of our men have also sustained injuries in the accident and are being treated at the JMCH,” the police official further said. 

Niraj Das, alias Kola Lora, the main suspect, was apprehended by police in Jorhat, Assam, on Tuesday.
On Monday afternoon, Kola Lora allegedly instigated and led an enraged mob in lynching AASU leader Animesh Bhuyan in Jorhat town.

People in Jorhat and Dergaon, both in Assam’s Golaghat district, are seen celebrating the death of prime suspect Kola Lora. People have been seen setting off fireworks to ‘celebrate’ the death of the accused, a notorious criminal.

In connection with the lynching case, police in Jorhat, Assam, have arrested 12 more people.
Meanwhile, the Assam government has announced a Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for the family of AASU leader Animesh Bhuyan, who was killed.
