Arunachal: Capital DC Talo Potom seeks cooperation of all to neutralize bandh call, internet suspended

Talo Potom, Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Magistrate in Itanagar, has sought the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the general public, in order to neutralise the All Nyishi Youth Association’s proposed 36-hour bandh (ANYA).

The organisation has called a 36-hour Itanagar bandh beginning on January 13 to demand the resignation of Chief Minister Pema Khandu. It has accused the chief minister of corruption, which the government spokesperson has dismissed as speculative and unfounded.

The administration has already declared the 36-hour bandh call ‘illegal’ in an executive order and has directed the said organisation to refrain/desist from enforcing the proposed bandh.

The DC also convened a series of meetings with the corporators, ZPMs, SP and his team, all executive magistrates deployed, and representatives of Itanagar, Naharlagun, Nirjuli, Banderdewa, ACCI, AAPPTF, and others.

The DC has also urged residents of the Capital Complex to “go about their normal routine life fearlessly” during the proposed bandh call period.

The DC informed the press that the executive members of ANYA were summoned to his office on Tuesday and were asked to call off/cancel the proposed bandh call.

However, in the evening, it was announced that ANYA had decided to proceed with the bandh call.

Later, an order was issued to the SP under Section 3 of the Arunachal Pradesh Prevention of Unlawful Activities Act, 2014 to detain the illegal bandh callers as a preventive measure.

The DC informed them that one of them had already been arrested, brought before the DC, and detained for 12 days in judicial custody. He also stated that efforts are being made to apprehend the remaining illegal bandh callers.

Assuring that adequate security measures have been implemented by the district administration, the DC stated that over 50 magistrates have been deployed across the district, covering every sector, and have been directed to arrest those involved in the illegal bandh call immediately.

He also stated that necessary instructions have been issued to suspend mobile internet services, including Wi-Fi, in order to avoid serious law and order issues.

He stated that all of the elected representatives, including corporators, ZPMs, market welfare associations, ACCI, and others, have expressed their full cooperation and assured the district administration that the shops would be protected during the proposed bandh period. Earlier, SP Nyelam Nega briefed everyone on the security arrangements throughout the Capital Complex.
