Arunachal Pradesh also known as the land of the Rising Sun, is the largest and least inhabited of Seven Sister States of Nort-East India. The Nyishi community is the largest ethnic group in Arunachal Pradesh with a population of about 3,00,000 people.
They are spread across eight districts Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey, East Kameng, West Kameng, Papum Pare, parts of Lower Subansiri, Kamle and Pakke Kesang district.
Nyishis are believed to have come from Burma (now Myanmar) and Tibet, where Mongoloid tribal groups with the same cultural practices are still active. This hunter-warrior tribe believes that they are the descendants of Abo Tani.
One remarkable feature of Nyishi society is that it is neither based on caste system nor classified into classes, except a loose type of social division, which is not determined by birth or occupation. They evolved a wide base family organization and a united and extended family model.
Nyishi community is divided into five major tribes based on heredity called Hosa (Identification through descendent of same forefather) namely Dopum, Dodum, Dolu, Hagung and Anyia Hari. The phratry system and for that matter clan division is mainly important on social and religious aspects.
The most striking feature is that the members of the same phratry and clan would help and co-operate one another in socio religious functions and they would share the blood and heart of a sacrificed or killed animal as a bond of brotherhood which is called Uyi Haa Debam Nam.
The Nyishis speak Tibeto-Burman language of the Sino-Tibetan family. However, there’s no script yet. Like many other tribes, they have a rich oral tradition of folklore, tribal history, and folk wisdom. Whatever is known of them is passed from Generation to generation through Oral traditions.
