During his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday (September 21), Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that China would not build new coal-fired power projects abroad, adding to previous pledges to combat climate change.
Xi did not provide any specifics, but depending on how the policy is implemented, it could severely restrict coal plant financing in developing countries.
China has been under a lot of diplomatic pressure to stop financing coal projects in other countries because it could make it easier for the world to stick to the Paris climate agreement’s goals of reducing carbon emissions.
