United States concerned Russia prepping for invasion

According to a US official who asked not to be identified, the Biden administration believes Russian actors are planning potential sabotage operations against Russian forces and fabricating Ukrainian provocations on social media to justify an intervention and sow divisions in Ukraine.

According to the person, President Vladimir Putin’s government is laying the groundwork for an attack, including through sabotage and information operations, by accusing Ukraine of planning offensive operations.

Moscow has prepositioned operatives trained in urban warfare and explosives, possibly to carry out acts of sabotage against Russia’s proxy forces in or near Ukraine, according to the source, who added that the plan would likely be implemented if diplomacy with the US, Nato, and key European countries fails.

The news comes after a cyber attack on Friday that took down a number of Ukrainian government websites. Russia has been accused of ramping up disinformation campaigns and staging “false flag” events to justify previous incursions in Ukraine’s Crimea region and Georgia.

According to a spokesperson for the National Security Council, President Joe Biden has been briefed on Friday’s attack, but the US does not yet have an attribution for who carried it out. Russia has denied the allegations and stated that it has no plans to attack Ukraine.

With over 100,000 Russian troops stationed along Ukraine’s border, US officials have long warned that Moscow may attempt to stage a “false flag” event to justify an invasion.

Despite the military alliance’s rejection, Russia reaffirmed its demand for Nato not to expand eastward on Friday, amid a Russian troop buildup near Ukraine.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that Moscow would not wait indefinitely for a response from the West, saying he expects a written response from the US and Nato next week.

EU foreign ministers issued a “robust” warning to Russia on Friday, fearing that a cyberattack on Ukraine could pave the way for military action by Moscow against its neighbour.

In the meantime, Ukraine has proposed a three-way meeting with Vice President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I believe we are still waiting for a response from Russia on this.” But our American partners are interested in our proposal,” said Andriy Yermak, the president’s chief of staff.
