Ten killed & Five missing after Boat carrying students overturns in China

According to state-run CGTN-TV, a passenger boat overturned in a river in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, killing at least ten people and leaving five others missing. Students made up the majority of the passengers. At 4:50 p.m., an accident occurred. On Saturday, in the Zangke River in Liupanshui’s Zangke Township.

The boat was designed to carry up to 40 passengers, but authorities are still determining the exact number of passengers, who are mostly students. According to the state-run Xinhua news agency, 40 people were rescued from the river until Sunday morning, 31 of whom were in non-life threatening conditions and nine of whom died after being rescued.

Five others have yet to be found. The search and rescue operation has enlisted the help of 17 rescue teams and 50 boats, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
