Assam: Five people found dead in Cachar’s Bhuban Hill

Five people found dead in Cachar’s Bhuban Hill

At least five people were discovered dead in various locations at a 17th century Shiva Temple on Cachar’s Bhuban Hill.

The five people were thought to be Lord Shiva devotees who had gone to the temple on the night of Shivratri.

Every year on the occasion of Shivratri, Bhuvan Mela is held on the Bhuban hill.

Thousands of people travel from all over the state to visit the historic Shiva temple on top of the hill, about 50 kilometres outside of Silchar.

After two years of the pandemic, locals say the Shiva Chaturdashi at Bhuban hill has returned to its usual festive mood.

Despite the fact that the Cachar administration had put in place tight security and other facilities to ensure the safety of pilgrims, tragedy struck.

Thousands of devotees set out on Tuesday morning to climb the Bhuban hill via two roads: Amraghat Krishnapur and Matinagar.

According to official estimates, approximately four lakh pilgrims climbed to the hill shrine in two days. Several social media videos depicted a stampede-like situation in the Hathubhanga area of the hill.

The deceased have been identified as Anand S Chakraborthy, Sanjay Das, Vikram Paul, N Kurmi, and Anand Ghatowar, according to officials.

Moreover, all of the people who died were residents of Silchar.

Initially, it was thought that they died in a stampede caused by heavy footfall in the temple.

The reports were, however, denied by the authorities.

V Paul and A Ghatowar, two of the five, died of pressure strokes, according to reports.

The cause of Sanjay Das’ death is unknown.

Kurmi, on the other hand, died from hyperthermia.

On his way to the temple, Chakraborthy was suspected of slipping.
