Caught in snowstorm, 3 Mumbai trekkers die in Himachal Pradesh

In a tragic event, 3 Mumbai trekkers died out of 13 on their expedition from Rohru to Kinnaur on October 17. Officials informed that the three trekkers from Maharashtra lost their lives by getting caught in a snowstorm in Himachal. Ten others have been recused.

Due to heavy snowfall in the region, the trekkers’ group got stranded in an area called Burua Kanda, following this a police team was sent to ensure their safety. While Deputy Commissioner, Kinnaur, Apoorv Devgan, informed that the ITBP team will bring the bodies down, they further appealed to the people visiting Kinnaur to not move towards higher regions amid bad weather conditions. He added that tourists and people residing in the region must move out only if necessary as the rain led to shooting stones at some stretches, which could turn dangerous.

The 3 Mumbai trekkers – Deepak Narayan 58; Rajendra Pathak 65; and Ashok Madhukar 64. Those who have been safely rescued are Rajneesh Kumar, Rakesh Sharma, Dhananjai Gavde, Pawan Kirtikar, Dhan Raj, Mahesh Hegde, Vishwas Adsug, Bhawna Deshmukh and Pradeep Roy of Delhi and one of them sustained cold injuries; Prasad Manohar. Of the 13 trekkers, 12 were from Mumbai and one from Delhi.

Kinnaur superintendent of police Ashok Rattan says, “A 13-member police team rescued four members around 12am, and it took another three hours to rescue the other six.”

He added, “A rescued trekker told us that three people had succumbed to hypothermia. However, due to heavy snowfall in the area at night, the rescuers were unable to reach the location. The 10 rescued trekkers were brought to the Reckong Peo Hospital. A rescue team, comprising Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel, has been dispatched to recover the bodies.”
